Tusculum's Pritchett, Carson-Newman's King Selected to AFCA Good Works Team
WACO, Texas --- Tusculum College's Craig Pritchett and Carson-Newman's Joey King have been selected to the 2003 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team announced officials Wednesday afternoon.
Pritchett, a senior linebacker from Rossville, Ga., becomes the first student-athlete from Tusculum to earn this prestigious accolade. The two 11-man teams, a Division I-A squad and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, were selected from nominations submitted to the AFCA by college sports information departments across the nation.
Pritchett has been active with the Big Brothers program in the Greeneville/Greene County area and helped initiate the "Lunch Buddies" program, in which Tusculum football players have lunch twice a week with youth in area elementary schools. He is also active with "Keep Greene Clean" and helped build a nature trail at a school. Pritchett tutors to disabled children in school work at Holston Home for Children and assisted in the renovation project of a local theatre.
"Craig is one of the most deserving members of our football program to earn this honor," said Tusculum head coach Frankie DeBusk. "He has been a great football player for us, but an even better person. Craig is a fine representative of Tusculum College and we will always be proud of him as a student-athlete, person and alumni."
The Ridgeland High School graduate has also excelled in the classroom and was named the 2002 South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. Pritchett has been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester while at the Greeneville, Tenn. school. Pritchett, a 2002 All-Conference Second Team pick, is currently fourth on the team in tackles with 13, including two for loss and a sack. His 247 career tackles are fifth all-time in school history and he is presently second all-time in tackles for loss (36).
King, a junior quarterback, has worked for the Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity and has been very active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle, serving as one of its officers. He is involved with a reading program at local elementary schools and assisted with a community neighborhood food drive. He has served as a speaker to various religious organizations in the community and assisted with the construction of a walking and nature trail at a nearby Tennessee Valley Authority facility.
The AFCA Good Works Team honors players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association, but when the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.
