Wingate Assistant AD David Sherwood Receives Pair of Awards

LEXINGTON, KY. -- Wingate University’s Assistant AD for sports information and game operations David Sherwood has garnered a pair of prestigious recognitions this summer. On Tuesday, Sherwood received the College Sports Information Directors of America 25-year Award in San Francisco, Calif. He was honored by the AVCA last week, earning the AVCA Grant Burger Media Award.

The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball, whether it be through consistent coverage in all mediums (sports information, print, broadcasting and web content), production of volleyball-specific publications or extensive radio and/or television exposure. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.

The Wingate volleyball team has hosted the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament the past two seasons. Sherwood played a large role in Wingate’s hosting the past two seasons. Wingate University has also introduced live video broadcasts over the past two seasons, and has provided free broadcasts for every match in the two Regional Tournaments. Wingate student-athletes have earned many accolades over the past several years, including four ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees in 2009. The Bulldogs also had the first volleyball player in SAC history earn First Team All-American honors in 2009, when Stormi Gale was honored by the AVCA. Wingate also became the first team in SAC history to earn a Top 25 ranking in the AVCA.

“I believe one of the most notable things in David Sherwood receiving such a nice award, is the fact that he has worked endless hours for many years in insuring that hundreds of Wingate athletes have been nominated for every academic, athletic, conference and national award possible,” head volleyball coach Shelton Collier says. “He takes great pride in helping athletes receive honors, so it is great that in this case, David is on the receiving end and getting recognition. I know every coach in the department is extremely appreciative of his efforts.”

Sherwood accepted his 25-year honor at a luncheon ceremony during CoSIDA’s annual convention at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. The CoSIDA 25-Year Award is presented to sports information directors who have completed 25 years in the profession.

A 1985 Wingate graduate, Sherwood has helped Wingate student-athletes earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors 34 times since 2000, the third highest total in NCAA Division II. The 43 Academic All-America® winners in the school’s history are tops among South Atlantic Conference schools.

Wingate leads the SAC with 52 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete awards, recognizing one outstanding student-athlete in each of the 14 conference-sponsored sports.

Sherwood began his career in 1985 as Wingate’s sports information director. He served in that role until 2004 when he was elevated to his current role. Sherwood also served as the interim softball coach from 1990-93 and has been the Wingate Baptist Church minister of youth since 1990.

Sherwood’s involvement with CoSIDA includes a one-year stint on the Membership Services Committee and 15 years as a member of the Academic All-America® committee. He has been part of the Daktronics All-American and the NCCSIA All-State committees.

In 2007 he received the Wingate University Faith Award and the Wingate University Service Award. One of the most genuine human beings in all of CoSIDA, Sherwood was presented the Bob Kenworthy Award in 2003.
