The South Atlantic Conference and AstroTurf Present Senior Spotlights Featuring UVa-Wise Baseball and Women's Golf
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – In light of the recent events of the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the remainder of the 2020 South Atlantic Conference spring sports seasons, the SAC along with its corporate partner AstroTurf, will be presenting the SAC AstroTurf Senior Spotlights. These highlights will showcase the spring sports teams at each of our 12 institutions and will give fans a brief overview of the team's shortened season, while highlighting the 2020 senior student-athletes on each team.
We continue our AstroTurf Senior Spotlights with the UVa-Wise Cavaliers and the baseball and women's golf teams.
BASEBALL
In their first year of SAC competition, the UVa-Wise baseball team finished the 2020 season with an 11-10 record overall. As a team, the Cavaliers ranked third in the league and 42nd nationally with a .408 on-base percentage. Gabe Wurtz led the conference with a .511 on-base percentage.
Leading the way for UVa-Wise were nine senior student-athletes; Jordan Turner, Tyler Blaum, Dawson Cagle, Tristan Peccerelli, Matthew Branham, Greg Duncan, Nate Thompson, Dylan Lutrell, and Wurtz.
Duncan finished the season tied for the league lead in complete games with two, while compiling his 200th career strikeout. He finished second in the SAC in strikeouts with 46.
Turner closed out the season with a .170 batting average, six RBIs and eight runs scored.
Blaum put up a .364 average for the season with seven doubles, 14 RBIs, 20 runs scored, and four stolen bases.
Cagle batted .262 with a pair of homers, two doubles, 13 RBIs, and eight runs scored.
Peccerelli closed out the year batting .231 with two doubles, eight runs scored and nine RBIs.
Branham hit .328 during the 2020 season, including five doubles, 14 runs scored and 11 RBIs.
Thompson earned a 1-1 record with a save in 14 innings of work on the mound. He allowed just 12 runs on 20 hits with 17 strikeouts and posted a 3.86 ERA.
Lutrell made four relief appearances in 2020, throwing four and a third innings allowing five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Wurtz batted .371 in 2020 with three home runs, five doubles, 20 runs scored and 19 RBIs.

WOMEN'S GOLF
The UVa-Wise women's golf team brought home two top-five finishes as a team during the 2019-20 season, placing fifth at the Bob Dibble Classic and fourth at the University of Pikeville Invitational.
The Cavaliers were led by senior Katie Pritchett. She had a pair of top-20 finishes during the season, placing 16th at the Bob Dibble Classic and 14th at the University of Pikeville Invitational. She shot 168 (+24) at the Bob Dibble Classic and posted a 170 (+26) at the University of Pikeville Invitational.
