GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone College field hockey team defeated Queens University of Charlotte 3-2 to win the inaugural South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Field Hockey Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
Limestone tallied the first two shots before Kate Remley connected with the back of the cage on the third shot of the game to give the Saints the early 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into regulation. After a series of back and forth action Kelly Diplock picked up a rebound ball and snuck it into the back of the cage to give Limestone the 2-0 edge at the 30:32 minute mark. In the final five minutes of the period, the Blue and Gold held the Royals scoreless to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Queens looked to shift the momentum coming out of the intermission and maintained possession of the ball on its offensive side of the field for a majority of the start of the half. The Royals used a penalty corner to set up their first goal of the game to bring the score to 2-1 at the 49:14 minute mark. Queens continued to make the Limestone defense do work and knotted the scoreboard five minutes later to bring the score to 2-all.
Over the next several minutes both teams battled to put the go-ahead goal into the back of the cage as the Saints outshot the Royals 3-2 before Samantha D'Antonio guided the ball into the left side of the net to give Limestone the 3-2 advantage. The Saints held the Royals scoreless in the final five minutes of regulation to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Saints will have to wait until tomorrow (Nov. 19) to see if they made it into the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Tournament. The selection show will be aired online at NCAA.com at 3 p.m.
