ROCK HILL, S.C. – First-year SAC member Queens captured the conference's men's soccer regular season title on Saturday and will be the No. 1 seed in next week's Food Lion SAC Men's Soccer Championship.
Queens beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2 on Saturday to secure the university's first SAC title in any sport. The Royals finished 9-2 in the SAC and 13-3 overall. Queens will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday against eighth-seeded Catawba.
Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne finished with identical 4-6-1 SAC records and tied for eighth in the conference standings, but the Indians receive the SAC Championship berth because of their head-to-head win over L-R on Oct. 23.
Wingate closed its regular season with a win over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to secure the bracket's No. 2 seed. WU went 8-2-1 in the conference, and will host No. 7 seed Anderson in the quarterfinal round. The Trojans – winners of the last three SAC Tournaments - finished 4-5-2 in league matches.
After starting 2-3 in SAC play, Carson-Newman closed the regular season with six-straight league wins to clinch the No. 3 seed in the championship bracket. The Eagles will play host to sixth-seeded Mars Hill – which finished 6-5 in the conference after a win over Catawba on Saturday – in the quarterfinals.
Coker defeated Brevard in its regular-season finale to equal LMU's record of 6-4-1 in the SAC. The Railsplitters, however, earn the No. 4 seed in championship by virtue of their win over Carson-Newman. LMU and Coker played to a draw head-to-head, both teams lost to the bracket's top two seeds - Queens and Wingate – and Coker was beaten by C-N.
LMU will host Coker on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round.
Following Tuesday's quarterfinals, the SAC Championship semifinals will move to Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, Nov. 8. The title match – also in Rock Hill – will then take place Sunday, Nov. 10. Full tournament details can be found at SAC Championship Central.
