ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens short stop Abby Lathan has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Player of the Week and Queens right-hander Shannon McGuire has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 5-11, the League announced today.
Lathan, a senior from Monroe, N.C., had an outstanding week as she led the Royals to a 4-1 record. For the week, she batted .500 with four extra bases hits, including a triple and three home runs. She had a .588 on-base percentage and a 1.286 slugging percentage, while driving in nine runs, scoring seven and she had two stolen bases. She was also just a double shy of hitting for the cycle in the Royals' 17-1 win over Johnson C. Smith.
McGuire, a freshman from Waxhaw, N.C. went 1-0 in the circle with a save in three appearances last week. In her first action of the week, she earned the save in a 5-3 win over UNC Pembroke, tossing one inning, allowing no runs and no hits with two strikeouts. She then went the distance for the Royals in their 17-1 win over Johnson C. Smith. She threw five innings, allowing just one run on two hits with nine strikeouts for the win. McGuire closed out the week with another scoreless inning of work in Queens 7-3 win over West Liberty. In all she threw seven innings, allowed one run on three hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts.
These are the first Player of the Week selections for both Lathan and McGuire this season.
