ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Catawba's junior distance runner Hannah Mercer was honored as the 2019 Elite 20 Award winner for women's outdoor track & field, presented by the South Atlantic Conference on Saturday, April 20.
This award honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average (based on a minimum of 48 credit hours) in each of the league's 20 team championship sports.
Mercer, a junior from Lexington, N.C., has a perfect 4.00 GPA while majoring in therapeutic recreation, completing 101 credit hours.
Heading into the championship weekend, Mercer has run the 5,000 meter three times this season with her best time of 19:07.05 coming at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting, an eighth place showing. She has also competed in the 1,500 meter twice with a season-best time of 5:09.69. Her personal best in the 5,000 meter came in 2018 at the Winthrop Adidas University Invitational (18:21.98), while in the 1,500 meter, she crossed the line in 2017 at the Montreat College Invitational with a time of 5:08.44.
