ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their 2018 NCAA Division II Individual and Team Academic Awards on Thursday, Feb. 14. Eight South Atlantic Conference teams were represented on the women's team list, with 22 runners receiving recognition.
In order to qualify for this honor, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 and finished among the top 30 percent of eligible runners at his or her regional championship and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA Championship meet.
There were 649 student-athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors with the women accounting for 58.4 percent of the total (379). Anderson and Queens led the way for the SAC women with six honorees apiece. Catawba had three, while Carson-Newman, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Tusculum had two each. Wingate rounded out the SAC women with one honoree.
Overall, there were 427 teams – 231 women's teams and 196 men's teams – that earned All-Academic honors. The SAC accounted for eight of the women's teams. Anderson, led by Head Coach Kevin Eagle, earned a 3.73 GPA. Carson-Newman, under the leadership of Head Coach Eric Philips, collected a 3.49 GPA. Jason Bryan's Catawba women earned a 3.55 GPA. Lenoir-Rhyne, under the tutelage of Danny Williamson, collected a 3.44 GPA. Mike Owen's Mars Hill women racked up a 3.2 GPA. Head Coach Tom Scott's Queens Royals tallied a 3.55 GPA. Tusculum earned a 3.33 GPA and was coached by Cory Pratt. Wingate, coached by Ashley Glover, rounded out the SAC schools with a 3.23 GPA.
