Wingate's Chahid and Newberry's Crowell Named South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Hamza Chahid was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, and Newberry's Kegan Crowell was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested during the fifth week of the outdoor track & field season, the Conference office announced today.
Chahid, a freshman distance runner from Casablanca, Mexico, posted the second-fastest 5,000-meter run mark in NCAA Division II when he took third at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 13:33.32. In addition to be in an NCAA provisional time, Chahid's time set a new Wingate record for the 5,000-meter by 22 seconds.
Crowell, a senior thrower from Beaufort, S.C., had an impressive showing at the Electric City Invitational where he won the hammer throw with a toss of 51.77 meters and came in second in the discus with a throw of 46.67 meters.
