Tusculum, Catawba, Carson-Newman, Wingate Advance In Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Tusculum, Carson-Newman, Catawba and Wingate all advanced on the second day of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament, held at Municipal Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

Tusculum 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Brandon Tuten tossed a complete-game six-hitter as the top-seed and 10th nationally-ranked Tusculum College defeated Lenoir-Rhyne College 7-1 on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
The Pioneers (43-10) will face the winner of the Carson-Newman/Catawba game tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne (35-18) is now eliminated from the tournament.
Tuten (5-3) went the distance, allowing only six hits while striking out seven. L-R starter Justin Crowell (7-2) received the loss.
Tusculum scored a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Dustin Morrow reached on an infield single and later scored on an RBI single by Paul Finger.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Matt Webb drove in a pair of runs in the frame with a two-run double.
After a single run in the fourth, Tusculum scored two runs in the eighth. Eric Barclay would single home a run. Aaron Hudgins, hustling on the play, scored all the way from first to make the score 6-1.
Aasron Porter finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Webb finished with a 2-for-5 performance with three runs batted in.
The Bears were led offensively by Hank Wofford, who went 2-for-4.
Catawba 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 8 (10)
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Jerry Sands drove in the game-winning run with a one-out triple as the third seeded Catawba College Indians defeated the fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne College Bears 9-8 in 10 innings at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Greenville on Friday.
Catawba (31-16) struck for two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Matt Kepley drove in a run with a single up the middle and Kevin McMillan scored on a throwing error by L-R (35-17) third baseman Hank Wofford.
After the Indians scored a run in the third, the Bears would tie the game at 3-3 in their half of the fourth. Evan Taylor doubled home a run and Mark Drucker delivered a RBI double down the line in left to tie the game.
L-R would take the lead at 5-3 in the fifth. Wofford and Taylor MacCurdy each delivered hits to start the frame. Dallas Tarleton would drive in both runs with a double to left, to give the Bears a two-run lead.
The Indians responded to tie the game at 5-5 in the home half of the fifth. Ryan Query scored from a third on a passed ball while McMillan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left-center.
L-R broke the tie in seventh with two runs when Rob Mullin doubled home a pair of runs.
Catawba would tie the game for the third time at 8-8 in the eighth. With runners in scoring position and two outs, Zach Evans singled in both runs off Bears reliever Kurt Benton.
The stage was set in the home half of the tenth for Sands and Catawba. After Query singled to left with one out, Sands ripped a pitched of L-R pitcher Andrew Cooper (2-3) into the gap. Without hesitation, Query scored the game-winning run all the way from first.
Query led the Indians at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored. MacCurdy led the Bears with a perfect 5-for-5 performance including two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Catawba reliever Tim Smith (7-5) received the victory pitching two scoreless innings.
Catawba will face second-seed Carson-Newman Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. while L-R will face top-seeded Tusculum College Friday at 8:00 p.m.
No. 2 Carson-Newman 11, No. 5 Newberry 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The second-seed Carson-Newman College Eagles would capitalize on four Newberry College errors in the first inning to score nine runs, en route to a 11-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Indians on Friday morning at Municipal Stadium in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The game was suspended on Thursday evening due to heavy rains in the area.
In the Carson-Newman (31-17) first, the Eagles put eight runs on the scoreboard before Newberry (19-28) recorded a single out. Eagle first baseman Nick Achberger drove in two runs in two at-bats in the frame with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
Jason Gray and Mills Rogers each collected three hits on the day for the Eagles. Jonathan McMahon also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Clark Mullins led the Indians at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, including a run scored.
Carson-Newman pitcher Wes McIntyre (1-0) came on in relief of starter Matt Teague, who started on Thursday. McIntyre pitched six innings, allowing no runs during the game.
Newberry starter Brandon Petty (6-3) took the loss, allowing only two earned runs while recording only one out in the contest.
Newberry will face Wingate in an elimination game this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Carson-Newman advanced in the winner's bracket and will face winner of the Catawba/Lenior-Rhyne game, which will be played today at 1:00 p.m.
