Mars Hill’s Presnell, Wingate’s Almond Named Baseball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Mars Hill College's Devin Presnell has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Wingate University's Tyler Almond earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending March 8, announced conference officials Tuesday.
Presnell, a senior shortstop from Boone, N.C., (Watauga HS) helped lead the Lions to a three-game sweep of No. 11 Catawba last weekend and put Mars Hill in first place in the league standings.
Presnell hit .429 with four runs scored, five RBI, a home run, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and had a perfect fielding percentage at shortstop on 17 chances. He had a slugging percentage of .643 and an on-base percentage of .438. He only struck out one time in 17 at-bats. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Presnell had a home run and drove in three runs.
Almond, a senior right-handed pitcher from Oakboro, N.C. (West Stanly HS), struck out a career-high 12 in Wingate's 2-1 win over Tusculum on Friday night. Almond allowed one unearned run on only three hits (all singles) against the defending SAC regular season champions. Almond is 1-0 on the season with a 1.96 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 23 innings of work.
