Tusculum’s Richmond, Catawba’s Mullins Named Baseball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Tusculum College's Jared Richmond has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Catawba College's Trevor Mullins earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending April 18, announced conference officials Monday.
Richmond, a senior from Fort Smith, Ark. (Arkansas-Fort Smith), batted .400 on the week, while recording four home runs and 11 RBI to lead the Pioneers to a 3-1 record last week.
During Tusculum's weekend series at Mars Hill, Richmond went 6-for-11 with 10 RBI and five runs scored as the Pioneers took two of three games from the homestanding Lions. In Tusculum's 10-6 win in the series opener, Richmond helped rally the Pioneers from a pair of three-run deficits. He connected on a two-run homer to pull the Pioneers within 5-4 and followed with another two-run blast to complete the rally. In game two of the series, Richmond went 3-for-4 with six RBI thanks to a pair of back-to-back three-run homers. Richmond posted a sizzling 1.267 slugging percentage in the series and was perfect in his 38 total fielding chances.
Mullins, a senior from Jamestown, NC (Appalachian St./Ragsdale HS), threw a complete-game four-hitter in a league win against Carson-Newman in which he struck out a career-high 15 batters. He senior got stronger in the late innings, retiring the final 10 batters he faces with seven by strikeout, including striking out the side in the ninth. He also pitched two innings of relief in an extra-inning win over Wingate in a non-conference game, posting four strikeouts and allowing one hit.
