SAC Baseball Championship Day Two Results
Day two of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship is underway in Forest City, N.C. Get recaps of each game once they've gone final here.
Catawba 14, Newberry 7 (Box Score)
FOREST CITY, N.C.-Catawba broke open a tie game with six runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from Newberry and earn a 14-7 victory over the Wolves in the second round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
Catawba batted around in the top of the seventh to break a seven-all tie. The Indians capitalized on five hits, two walks and an error in the inning. Catawba advances to face the loser of the Carson-Newman vs. Wingate matchup tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. Newberry is eliminated from the tournament.
Julio Zubillaga broke the tie with an RBI-single to open the scoring in the seventh for Catawba. Ethan Satterfield followed with a two-run single of his own to make it a three-run game. After Zubillaga scored on a passed ball and Satterfield scored on a throwing error, an RBI-double by Cameron Beard made the score 13-7 and capped the scoring in the inning.
The two teams traded leads several times prior to the seventh. Newberry held leads of 1-0 after the first, 5-3 after the fourth and 6-5 after the fifth. Catawba held a 2-1 lead after the top of the second, and a 6-5 lead after the top of the fifth.
Brett Underwood paced Catawba offensively with four hits and four RBI's. Lawson added two hits and three RBI for the Indians. Nate King earned the victory with two-thirds of an inning of perfect relief.
Newberry was paced by Kevin Rufus with two hits and two RBI. Albert Baur and John Fogarile added RBIs for the Wolves.
Tusculum 14, Brevard 0 (Box Score)
FOREST CITY, N.C.-Tusculum broke out the big bats early and rode shutdown pitching from Taylor Rakes to a 14-0 victory over Brevard in the second round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
Tusculum scored jumped out to a nine-run lead in the first two innings and never looked back. Cody Coffman had two hits and three RBI to pace the Pioneers, while Carlos Santana added two hits, including a grand slam. Tusculum advances in the winners bracket to face either Wingate or Carson-Newman at noon tomorrow. Brevard is eliminated from the tournament.
Brevard started quick and loaded the bases with none out in the top of the first, but Rakes shut the door by inducing a double play and groundout to escape the inning unscathed.
From there, Tusculum's bats took over. Three walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the first for Coffman, who plated the game's first two runs with a two-run single. Matt Henriksen added an RBI on a fielder's choice and a Heath Comerford sacrifice fly capped the scoring to make it 4-0 after one.
The Pioneers loaded the bases again in the second before breaking through. Henriksen picked up another RBI on a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0. Santana then unloaded on a pitch to deep right field for a grand slam and a 9-0 Tusculum lead.
That was more than enough for Rakes, who went eight shutout innings on the mound for the Pioneers. Rakes scattered six hits, walked two and fanned five to earn the victory.
The Pioneers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
Wingate 6, Carson-Newman 3
FOREST CITY, N.C.-A three-run homer by Brian Yeung broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth and sparked Wingate to a 6-3 victory over Carson-Newman in the second round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
Yeung's three-run jack provided the winning runs for Wingate. Casey Allison also homered for the Bulldogs, who got 6.1 innings of solid pitching from starter Olen Little. Cody Fox hit a solo homer to pace Carson-Newman offensively. Wingate will face Tusculum in the winner's bracket at noon tomorrow. Carson-Newman will face Catawba in an elimination game at 3:45 p.m.
Wingate got off to a quick start. Thomas Spitz led off the game with a triple. A Dade McPherson sacrifice fly scored Spitz to give the Bulldogs the lead. Spitz had three hits on the night, and scored two runs.
Fox's solo homer tied the score in the top of the second, but Wingate responded to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Allison's solo blast.
Carson-Newman tied the score again in the top of the fifth when Trace Rogers scored on a wild pitch.
Yeung's home run in the bottom of the fifth made the score 5-2 in favor of the Bulldogs. Wingate tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-single by Michael Godinez.
Carson-Newman added a run in the top of the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI-single by Evan Kirkpatrick.
Wingate got a solid pitching effort from Little. The sophomore
allowed two earned runs, scattered six hits and struck out eight
over 6.1 innings to earn the victory.
