Tusculum's Torres Tabbed NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week
PEMBROKE, N.C. - For the second consecutive week, Tusculum College senior lefthander Placido Torres has been named the NCBWA Regional Pitcher of the Week, for his performance during the week of February 22-28.
The North Brunswick, New Jersey, native pitched a one-hit shutout with a school-record 17 strikeouts in Tusculum's 5-0 win over Stillman College on Saturday. The 17 strikeouts broke the record of 16 he set exactly one week earlier against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Torres carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a two-out single, then retired six of the final Stillman batters he faced via strikeout to set the record.
Torres leads the South Atlantic Conference in strikeouts (54) and earned run average (0.30), having allowed just one earned run in 30 innings on the mound spanning four starts. Torres has a 4-0 record and has limited the opposition to an .074 batting average.
Tusculum (10-4) returns to action on Wednesday as the Pioneers host UVa-Wise at Pioneer Park, beginning at 5 p.m.
