The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2019 Baseball Annual Award

ROCK HILL, S.C. ( Newberry outfielder Danton Hyman was voted the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Year, while Tusculum hurler Charles Hall was named the Pitcher of the Year.  In addition, Newberry's Josh Bookbinder was voted the SAC Freshman of the Year and Newberry skipper Russell Triplett was named Coach of the Year, the Conference announced today. 

Hyman, a senior from Prosperity, S.C., started all 50 games for the Wolves this season, posting a .418 batting average with 16 doubles, five triples, a home run, 58 runs scored and 43 RBIs. A two-time SAC AstroTurf Player of the Week, Hyman stole 20 bases this season and is currently the NCAA Division II active career leader in hits and stolen bases. He also leads all three NCAA divisions in hits this season with 84 in 201 at-bats. In addition to his prowess at the plate, Hyman has been outstanding in the field, posting a .978 fielding percentage with 130 putouts, four outfield assists and just three errors.

Hall, a senior right-hander from Dumfries, Va., finished the regular season with a 6-2 record on the mound in 12 appearances. He allowed just 27 runs on 57 hits with 137 strikeouts and only 37 walks in 81.2 innings of work. A two-time SAC AstroTurf Pitcher of the Week and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week, Hall established a new NCAA Division II record for strikeouts in a game when he fanned 22 batters on March 15. He currently leads NCAA Division II in strikeouts.  

Bookbinder, a freshman right-handed pitcher from Powdersville, S.C., posted a 9-1 record on the mound in 13 appearances this season. He threw 76.1 innings, allowing 31 runs on 75 hits with 55 strikeouts, 23 walks and 3.54 ERA. In six of his 12 starts Bookbinder went the distance, ranking him first in the SAC and third in NCAA Division II in complete games. 

Triplett earns his second conference coach of the year award after leading the Wolves' to their first-ever SAC Regular Season Title in 2019. Under his leadership Newberry has been ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation and the Wolves have spent four weeks ranked in the top-10 in the nation. Six players earned SAC AstroTurf Player or Pitcher of the Week honors this season and Triplett's squad leads the SAC in four statistical categories; runs (409), triples (25), RBI (356) and stolen bases (110).

The SAC baseball awards will be presented at the 2019 Pilot Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. on Friday, April 26, between games four and five.
