Wingate's Simpson Earns NCBWA Region Player of the Week Honors
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt sophomore infielder Carson Simpson has been named the Southeast Region Player of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), officials announced Tuesday afternoon. University of Mount Olive junior right-hander Hunter Stevens is the NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.
Simpson hit .400 to help lead the Bulldogs to the SAC Tournament title, with a double, triple, seven RBI and seven runs scored. He had a hit in every game, including in the win over #13 Catawba, when he drove in two runs which included the ninth-inning walk-off single in an elimination game. Simpson had a double, triple, four RBI and three runs scored in the title game. His two-out, bases-clearing three-run triple in the eighth turned a four-run lead into a 10-3 Wingate advantage.
Stevens was phenomenal on the hill in Mount Olive's conference victory over Belmont Abbey. Stevens struck out 11 in a complete-game win. He allowed just one run on two hits in nine innings of work while throwing 139 pitches on the day.
