Newberry's Marine Named NCBWA Region Player of the Year, Wingate's Gregory Coach of the Year; 10 SAC Players Named All-Region
Wingate, N.C.----The 2022 All-Southeast Region Teams from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has been announced. The 30 honorees represent 16 different teams in the region, with defending national champion Wingate leading the way with five All-Region honorees, followed closely by Francis Marion with four selections. Wingate and current number one team in the nation North Greenville lead the way with three first team selections apiece, with FMU and Lenoir-Rhyne getting two first team honorees apiece. In total, seven different teams had multiple All-Region selections.
Newberry redshirt junior Braylin Marine has been named the NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Year. The SAC Player of the Year is hitting .431 on the year, leading the nation with 90 hits while ranking 10th nationally with 73 RBI and 12th with 21 doubles.
Georgia Southwestern redshirt senior Jared Donalson has been named the Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year. He is 10-3 on the season, compiling a 1.81 ERA while piling up 121 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings of work. Donalson has tossed three complete games on the year, while holding opponents to a .189 batting average.
Wingate's Jeff Gregory is the NCBWA Southeast Region Coach of the Year. The ABCA National Coach of the Year in 2021, Gregory has guided the Bulldogs to a nation's-best 46 victories this season, winning the regular season SAC title with a 21-2 mark in league play. The defending national champions were ranked #1 or #2 in every regular season NCBWA Top 25 poll in 2022.
North Greenville's John Michael Faile is the first team All-Region catcher, posting a .414 batting average with 15 homers, 12 doubles and 81 RBI while scoring 59 runs and posting a .729 slugging percentage. Darius Nobles from Francis Marion is the first team All-Region first baseman, hitting .402 with 14 homers and 12 doubles while driving in 53 runs and posting a .736 slugging percentage while scoring 51 runs. Mount Olive junior Jack Casbarro is the first team honoree at second base, piling up 15 homers and 60 RBI while hitting .345 with 78 runs scored, while also stealing 33 bases in 36 attempts. Todd Mattox from Francis Marion is the first team third baseman, hitting .393 with 14 doubles, five triples, two homers and 46 RBI, scoring 54 runs while piling up 79 hits. Marine rounds out the infield as the first team All-Region shortstop.
North Greenville's Marek Chlup leads the way in the outfield. The Conference Carolinas Player of the Year is hitting .415 with 11 homers, 18 doubles and 65 RBI while collecting 76 hits and 57 runs scored to go along with 25 stolen bases. Crews Taylor of North Georgia, the Peach Belt Player of the Year, is also a first team All-Region outfielder, ranking sixth in the nation with 23 homers while hitting .354, adding 17 doubles and 56 RBI, scoring 69 times while posting a .758 slugging percentage and stealing 18 bases in as many attempts. UNC Pembroke's Bobby Dixon rounds out the first team outfield, hitting .351 with 15 homers, 17 doubles and 58 RBI, scoring 56 runs on the year.
Donalson tops the starting pitchers, followed by SAC Pitcher of the Year Brody McCullough of Wingate. The redshirt junior is 8-1 with a 2.08 ERA on the year, striking out 101 in 56 1/3 innings to rank second in the nation in strikeouts per game. Lenoir-Rhyne's Joshua Lanham is a first team All-Region honoree, going 10-1 with a 2.20 ERA while striking out 102 in 82 innings of work and notching three complete games on the year. Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year Reece Fields of North Greenville rounds out the first team starting pitchers. He is 9-1 with a 3.57 ERA, striking out 82 in 75 innings of work while tossing a pair of complete games. Wingate's Sam Brodersen is the first team All-Region reliever, going 4-0 on the year with eight saves, compiling a 2.27 ERA while striking out 74 in 43 innings of work and holding opponents to a .164 average.
Wingate's Mitch Farris is the first team All-Region Utility player. He is hitting .359 with nine homers, 11 doubles and 48 RBI while going 6-1 on the mound with three saves and a 2.05 ERA, striking out 55 in 44 innings of work. Lenoir-Rhyne's Drew Yniesta is the first team All-Region designated hitter. He is hitting .384 with 13 homers, 11 doubles and 52 RBI, scoring 62 runs on the year.
Columbus State's Robert Brooks is the second team All-Region catcher, hitting .395 with 18 homers, 10 doubles and 79 RBI, scoring 67 runs. Teammate Steven Minter is the second team first baseman, hitting .378 with 13 homers, 11 doubles and 65 RBI while scoring 50 runs. Wingate's Seaver King is the second team second baseman, hitting .398 with 18 doubles, three triples and three homers, driving in 38 runs on the year. Mount Olive's Alden Cottle earns second team All-Region accolades at third base, hitting .344 with five homers, eight doubles and 61 RBI, scoring 47 runs. Belmont Abbey's Ben Gobbel is the second team shortstop, piling up 15 homers, 15 doubles and 68 RBI to go along with his .365 average.
Nick Brassington of Queens leads the way on the second team outfield. He is hitting .370 on the season with 16 homers and 57 RBI, adding 14 doubles and scoring 54 runs. Francis Marion's Will Hardee is also a second team selection, hitting .405 with 22 doubles, two triples and two homers, driving in 40 runs and scoring 60 times. Belmont Abbey's Sean Johnson rounds out the outfield, hitting .353 with 14 homers, 17 doubles, 42 RBI and 65 runs scored.
USC Aiken's Joel Haney leads the way as a second team All-Region pitcher, going 7-4 with a 2.39 ERA, striking out 71 in 83 innings of work with a pair of complete games. Barton's Alex Hart is a second team selection, posting a 9-4 record with a 3.48 ERA, striking out 108 in a region-high 111 innings of work, while also leading the region with six complete games. Matt Bradley of Carson-Newman is a second team honoree, going 8-0 with a 2.74 ERA, striking out 59 in 66 innings of work while tossing a pair of complete games. Wingate's Austin Mitchell rounds out the All-Region starting pitchers, going 10-0 on the season with a 4.02 ERA, striking out 55 in 69 innings of work. McClain Harris of Young Harris is the second team reliever. He is 10-4 on the year with seven saves, posting a 2.13 ERA while striking out 65 in 93 innings of work.
Ben Ferguson of Belmont Abbey is the second team All-Region Utility player. He is hitting .347 on the year with 14 homers, 14 doubles and 50 RBI, scoring 62 runs. Leniel Gonzalez of Francis Marion is the second team All-Region designated hitter. He is hitting .377 with seven doubles, seven homers and 45 RBI on the season, scoring 37 runs.
