Tusculum’s Colclough, North Alabama’s Hall Headline 2003 Football Gazette All-South Region Team
CLINTON, S.C. - Harlon Hill quarterback Will Hall from the University of North Alabama and defensive back/return specialist Ricardo Colclough from Tusculum College highlight a talented 2003 All-South Region Team selected by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
This marks the second year Football Gazette has selected NCAA Division II All-Region teams. The national publication has selected NCAA Division II All-America teams since 1988.
The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2003 NCAA Division II Football Gazette All-America team will be selected later this month.
Hall, a 5-8, 184-pound senior from Amory, Miss., passed for 3,531 yards and 30 touchdowns while running for 467 yards and five TD's in leading the Lions to a 13-1 record, the Gulf South Conference title and a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy this year. He finished the season leading NCAA Division II in pass efficiency (173.3) and ranked 12th in total offense per game (285.6). In addition, he led the Lions to one of the biggest turnarounds in college football from a 4-7 record in 2002 to a 13-1 mark this season.
Colclough, a 6-0, 185-pound senior from Sumter, S.C., was named to the first team at two different positions, defensive back and return specialist. He recorded 59 tackles (37 solo) with 24 pass defenses including 11 interceptions. His pass defenses and interceptions this season ranks third in NCAA Division II. In addition, he averaged 29.1 yards per kick return with two touchdowns and 14.2 yards per punt return with one touchdown en route to first team All-SAC honors at both positions. For his efforts, he was named SAC Defensive Player of the Year and was named a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy while leading his team to a school-record 9-2 record.
A total of 81 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-South Region honors. Players from 27 football-playing schools in the South Region earned All-South Region accolades.
The South Atlantic Conference had a total of 28 honorees on the team. SAC Co-Champions Catawba and Tusculum each placed six on the squad, while Carson-Newman, the other conference co-champion, had five.
Catawba had a pair of First Team picks in offensive guard Cole Beane and defensive end Khanis Hubbard. Wide receiver Corey Ready and linebacker SaMario Houston were named to the Second Team. Quarterback Luke Samples and offensive tackle Joe Nixon were Third Team selections.
Tusculum's Colclough is joined on the first team by offensive tackle Alan Dunn and center Felix Perez. Wide receiver Kevin Wolcott was named to the All-Region Second Team, along with safety D.J. Starling. Dunn earns All-Region honors for a second straight year. The 6-7, 315-pound offensive tackle from Chattanooga, Tenn. is a two-time recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded to the top offensive lineman or blocking back in the SAC, including this year. In 2002, he earned All-American recognition from D2Football.com, Football Gazette and the Associated Press. Dunn is a three-time All-SAC First Team selection and was tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Second Team. The Boyd Buchanan High School graduate will play for the East All-Star squad at next month's Whataburger Cactus Bowl Game. Perez earns a spot on the All-South First Team in his first season at center. The 6-1, 290-pound Lancaster, Calif. native garnered All-Conference Second Team honors this season.
Also playing in the Cactus Bowl in January and earning a spot as a Second Team All-Region receiver is senior Kevin Wolcott. The Crossville, Tenn. product enjoyed the finest season ever by a Tusculum wideout. The 6-3, 200-pounder led the nation with a school record 92 receptions. He also established a school mark with 1,159 receiving yards. His season tallies were the third best in conference history. Wolcott garnered First Team All-SAC accolades and established career records in receptions (200), receiving yards (2,357) and touchdown catches (12). His yardage total is the ninth most in conference history.
Starling led the Pioneers with 74 tackles in 2003. The 5-10, 195-pound free safety was a three-time All-Conference selection. Starling, a native of Ft. Valley, Ga., earned Daktronics All-Region First Team honors in 2001 as led TC with 100 tackles. He missed a majority of the 2002 campaign with a shoulder injury, but bounced back with an outstanding senior outing in 2003. He leaves Tusculum with 308 career tackles, the fourth best hit-tally in school history.
For the Carson-Newman Eagles, Reggie Perkins (Rome, Ga.) is the only first team selection. The junior offensive lineman makes the team for the second consecutive season. Perkins was an important part of the Eagles' offensive line that helped to lead the nation in rushing yards per game in 2003.
J.J. Chatmon (Cartersville, Ga.) and Leonard Weaver (St. Petersburg, Fla.) were named to the offensive second team. Chatmon led the Eagles in rushing with 933 yards and nine touchdowns. Weaver was named to the All-Region team after catching 12 passes for 359 yards and five touchdowns at the tight end position. An excellent blocking tight end, Weaver averaged over 30 yards per reception in the Eagles' veer option offense.
Justin Anderson (New Market, Tenn.) was selected to the All-South Region third team. Anderson was a three-year starter at center and was named to the All-SAC team in 2003. Clarence Glymph (Newberry, S.C.) was one of the leaders of the Eagles' defense as he recorded 44 tackles and led the team with 11 sacks and eight quarterback hurries.
Wingate University also placed five on the squad. Punter Chris Brewer was a First Team selection. Brewer was named first team All-South Atlantic Conference as a punter and a place kicker. He made the 2003 Daktronics All-South Region team as a punter. Brewer earned Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette special teams Player of the Week six times this year and D2Football.com special teams Player of the Week one time.
A four-time SAC special teams Player of the Week, Brewer hit South Atlantic Conference record 89-yard punt versus Lenoir-Rhyne College on Oct. 11, 2003. Brewer led the South Atlantic Conference in punting average (42.3 yards per punt). Brewer is 11th in the NCAA Division II in punting average. In addition, he topped the SAC charts with 27 punts inside the 20.
The 2003 season was Brewer's first season of full-time punting duty. Brewer had not punted in college prior to this season. He had 85 punts for 3597 yards (42.3 yards per punt) with four touchbacks and 20 punts of 50 yards or better. Wingate's other selections were offensive guard Marcus Johnson and defensive end John Bowman on the Second Team. Bowman earned first team All-South Atlantic Conference honors this season. He is fourth in the NCAA in pass sacks (1.2 sacks per game) and 33rd in tackles for loss (1.5 tackles for loss per game). Bowman led the nation in sacks for the majority of the regular season.
All-purpose back Erie Williams and defensive back Jaquion Gholston were named to the Third Team for the Bulldogs. Presbyterian and Newberry each had two representatives. For the Blue Hose, defensive lineman Terry Canty was a Second Team selection, while defensive lineman Tony Gaines was named to the Third Team. For the Indians, wide receiver Derrick Higgins and linebacker Terrance Leverett were both named to the Third Team. Leverett led the SAC in tackles per game.
Mars Hill had one selection, with senior defensive lineman Tellex Lanham making the First Team. Lenoir-Rhyne defensive back Roy Dawkins was a Second Team selection.
