Wingate’s Brewer Earns National Football Honors for Second Week
Westmont, Ill.----Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette has honored junior Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C./Sun Valley HS) as the NCAA Division II special teams "player of the week." Brewer wins the national honor for the second week in a row. This week's South Atlantic Conference special teams "player of the week," Brewer was honored as an honorable mention D2Football.com special teams "player of the week" on Monday.
A 6-0, 215 junior kicker from Weddington, N.C., Brewer helped the Bulldogs defeat NCAA Division I-AA Charleston Southern 22-6 Saturday afternoon. In addition to his three field goals (in three tries), he boomed six punts for an average of 41.8 yards per punt.
He had two 55-yard punts and had three punts inside the 20-yard line. Brewer's kick-offs give the Bulldogs' a tremendous advantage. On Saturday afternoon, Charleston Southern returned only one kick-off for 13 yards. The Buccaneers started this particular drive on their own 15-yard line. In addition, Brewer had two kick-offs go out of the end zone for touchbacks.
Thanks to Brewer's kicking and punting, CSU's average field position was the CSU 29-yard line, while Wingate's average field position was the Wingate 45-yard line. Brewer has handled Wingate's kick-offs for three seasons.
Brewer leads the South Atlantic Conference in field goals (2.5
per game) and kick scoring (9.0 points per game). Brewer has been
named the SAC special teams "player of the week" twice this
season.
