Eight SAC Football Players Tabbed Preseason All-America by Football Gazette
ROCK HILL -- The South Atlantic Conference had eight players named to the 2003 Football Gazette Preseason All-American Division II All-America Team.
Earning the honors are return specialist Donald Amaker and offensive lineman Alan Dunn from Tusculum; offensive linemen Reggie Perkins and Bakari Wilkerson and defensive lineman Clarence Glymph of Carson-Newman College; Catawba College placekicker Allan Rohrbaugh and defensive back Jamel Jackson; and all-purpose back Terry Meng of Presbyterian College.
Perkins (Rome, Ga.) and Wilkerson (Ooltewah, Tenn.) were selected to the All-South Atlantic Conference team in 2002 after anchoring an offensive line that helped the Eagles lead the nation in rushing offense with over 346 yards per game. Perkins and Wilkerson were named to the Football Gazette's All-American team and the Daktronics All-Region team at the conclusion of last season.
Glymph (Newberry, S.C.), a defensive lineman, had 57 tackles in 2002 and added 13 tackles for loss (-69), eight sacks for -51 yards, six quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick. He was named to the All-SAC team as well as the Football Gazette All-South Region team.
This marks the third straight year for Amaker and second for Dunn to earn preseason honors from the Football Gazette.
Amaker, a 5-9, 195-pound senior from Bluefield, W.Va., has garnered All-America recognition for the past two seasons as a return specialist, including last year where he was tabbed by the Football Gazette and D2Football.com. Amaker led the South Atlantic Conference in punt returns for a second straight year averaging 17.1 yards per return, which was a new school record and second best in the nation. The Bluefield High School graduate also finished 18th in kickoff return average with 25.9 yards per return. He is a two-time All-Conference First Team selection while also garnering Football Gazette All-Region First Team status in 2002.
For Dunn, this marks his second preseason All-America nod this summer. The 6-7, 315-pound senior offensive lineman from Chattanooga, Tenn. was named to Lindy's Preseason All-American First Team earlier this month. In 2002, the Boyd-Buchanan High School alum became the first TC gridder to garner All-America recognition from three organizations in one year including D2Football.com, Football Gazette and the Associated Press. Dunn is a two-time NCAA II All-South Region pick and was the 2002 recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best lineman or blocking back in the South Atlantic Conference. He has twice been named to the All-SAC First Team and was a First Team All-Region pick by the Football Gazette in 2002.
Meng, a 5-9, 163-pound wideout from Campobello, S.C., was named to the All-American team as an all-purpose back. Last season, Meng played in all 11 games while leading his team in receptions (54), receiving yards (702), receiving touchdowns (8), all-purpose yards (112.8/gm), and scoring (60 pts) en route to first team All-SAC and Don Hansen's Football Gazette first team All-South Region honors.
In addition, he led the team with a 16.1 yards per punt return
average, good for third in the SAC and ninth in NCAA Division II.
He finished tied for first in the SAC in receptions per game
(4.91), second in receiving yards per game (63.8) and all-purpose
yards per game (112.8), and tied for fifth in scoring (5.5
pts/gm).
