Newberry’s Haynes, Wingate’s Cummings, Brown named Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on October 7 are Newberry running back Alex Haynes, Wingate defensive end Kenwin Cummings and Wingate defensive back Donald Brown. Haynes was named Offensive Player of the Week, Cummings Defensive Player of the Week and Brown was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Haynes, a 5-11 junior from Summerville, S.C., rushed for 162 yards on 21 carries and scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:49 remaining, as No. 18 Newberry defeated Catawba 21-14. The Summerville High School graduate averaged 7.7 yards per carry as the Indians remained undefeated on the season at 6-0.
Cummings, a 6-2, 260-pound junior from Maxton, N.C., had 10 tackles and forced a fumble in Wingate's 14-9 road win at Presbyterian. The Purnell Swett High School graduate tallied 4.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries and two sacks in the victory as the Bulldogs improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in SAC play.
Brown, a 5-9, 185-pound senior from Morganton, N.C., helped Wingate obtain an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter when he returned a punt for a 48-yard touchdown in the Bulldogs win at Presbyterian. Brown, a graduate of Freedom High School, returned three punts for 51 yards, moving his average to 12.5 yards per return this season. The touchdown return marks the second one this season and fourth of his career. This marks the second time this season Brown has earned this honor.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
