Newberry’s Zimmerman, Ransom, Tusculum’s Gregory named Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on October 21 are Newberry wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman, Newberry defensive end Tony Ransom and Tusculum punter John Gregory. Zimmerman was named Offensive Player of the Week, Ransom Defensive Player of the Week and Gregory was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Zimmerman, a 6-3 senior from Bennettsville, S.C., caught 10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns as the 17th-ranked Indians defeated No. 22 Wingate 36-24. The All-SAC standout also passed for a 22-yard touchdown in the win.
Ransom, a 6-4 junior from Marion, S.C., recorded seven tackles and returned a fumble 14 yards for a touchdown to seal Newberry's victory over Wingate. Ransom accounted for six solo hits, a sack, two quarterback hurries and forced a fumble as the defense limited the Bulldogs to one yard rushing for the game.
Gregory, a 6-2, 210-pound freshman from Ootlewah, Tenn., averaged 47.8 yards on his six punts in Tusculum's 21-20 road win at Catawba. Gregory, who earns this honor for a second time this year, pinned the Catawba Indians inside the 20-yard line twice, including his career-best 75-yard punt, the third longest kick in school history. Gregory leads the league in with his 40.3 punting average, the fourth-best in TC history.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
