Wingate’s Metzelaars, Brown, Newberry’s Newell named SAC Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week. Earning honors for the week ending on September 9 are Wingate quarterback Anthony Metzelaars, Newberry linebacker Will Newell and Wingate return specialist Donald Brown. Metzelaars was named Offensive Player of the Week, Newell Defensive Player of the Week and Brown was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.
Metzelaars, a 6-3, 215-pound senior from Charlotte, N.C., completed 20-of-42 passes for a career-high 324 yards and the game-winning touchdown as Wingate posted a 22-16 overtime win at Davidson College. After being sacked on the first play of the overtime period, Metzelaars regrouped and completed a 38-yard TD strike to Gary Tatum for the winning score.
Newell, a 6-2, sophomore from Irmo, S.C., recorded 14 tackles as Newberry defeated Morehead State 23-7. Newell's tackle-tally included eight solo stops and 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Brown, a 5-9, 185-pound return specialist from Morganton, N.C., returned a second quarter punt 72 yards for a touchdown, helping shift the momentum as Wingate rallied to defeat Davidson. On the day, Brown returned four punts for 110 yards including the 72-yarder which was his third career TD via punt return. Brown also made five tackles, including three solo hits and a pair of pass break-ups.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
