Newberry’s Haynes, Wingate’s Floyd, Mars Hill’s Johnson Named Football Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The South Atlantic Conference has announced its football Players of the Week for the week ending September 8, 2007. This week's recipients are Newberry College senior running back Alex Haynes , Wingate University redshirt senior linebacker Bobby Floyd and Mars Hill College freshman inside linebacker Zach Johnson. Haynes was named Offensive Player of the Week, Floyd earned Defensive Player of the Week laurels and Johnson received the Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Haynes earns SAC Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career. He broke the Newberry single-game rushing record Saturday, racking up 255 yards on 25 carries as the number 14 Indians defeated visiting Bowie State (Md.) University 41-7. A 5-11 running back from Summerville High School (Summerville, S.C.), Haynes also had Newberry's fifth-longest run from scrimmage with an 83-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter. He has averaged over 10 yards a carry two weeks in a row.

Floyd is a first-time SAC Player of the Week honoree. The Fairmont High School (Fairmont, N.C.) graduate led the Bulldog defense with a career-high 18 total tackles (seven solo and 11 assists) as Wingate outlasted Davidson 33-30 Saturday. Floyd participated on four special teams units (kick-off return and coverage, punt coverage and extra-point block) in addition to his defensive duties. A 6-3, 240-pound linebacker, Floyd also returned one kick-off for 26 yards. Thanks to the efforts of Floyd and his teammates, the Bulldog defense played solid against the run for the second straight week. After allowing only five yards on the ground September 1 against Saint Paul's (Va.) College, the Bulldogs surrendered 37 yards on 28 Davidson rushing attempts Saturday.
Johnson earns SAC Player of the Week honors for the first time in his Mars Hill Lion career. A 6-3, 230-pound Avery County High School (Newland, N.C.) product, Johnson recovered a Brevard College fumble in the end zone on a Lion kickoff in the third quarter. The Lions silenced the Tornados 35-7 Saturday afternoon at Mars Hill. In addition to his opportune touchdown, Johnson made two tackles on the Lions' kick-off team. On the day, he recorded six tackles (two solo and four assists) and a quarterback hurry.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
