Newberry’s Moyd, Lukshis, Catawba’s Bell Named Football Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The South Atlantic Conference announced its football Players of the Week for the week ending October 20, 2007. Newberry College claims two of the three awards this week. The Indians won a barn-burner Saturday, taking a 17-14 decision over Tusculum College.
Newberry's recipients are redshirt sophomore cornerback Andre Moyd (Andrews, S.C.) and senior place kicker Ryan Lukshis (Irmo, S.C.). Catawba College junior tailback George Bell (Fayetteville, N.C.) earns SAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Both Moyd (defense) and Lukshis (special teams) earn SAC Player of the Week laurels for the first time this season. Lukshis has three career honors, as he was named SAC Special Teams Player of the Week twice in 2005.

George Bell delivered his first career 100-yard afternoon as he had 103 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns in a 45-20 win over Wingate Saturday. A 5-11, 210 pound graduate of Britt High School, Bell scored on runs on one, 11 and six yards to up his season total to 16 TD (15 rushing).
Bell ties a 72-year-old school record with his 15th rushing touchdown. His 98 points this season is six shy of the 1948 school mark of 104 in one season. Bell carried all three times for 32 yards in getting his one-yard run for a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter.
He added an 11-yard jaunt in the second period for a 21-13 Tribe edge. Bell scored on a six-yard run to push the Catawba lead to 31-13. On the season, Bell has rushed 89 times for 488 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.
Andre Moyd had a big day as the number 25 Newberry Indians edged Tusculum 17-14. A 5-11, 195 pound cornerback, Moyd returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-all in the third quarter. Moyd's pick helped keep the Indians in the game.
The Andrews High School product also recorded a season-high five solo tackles and two pass breakups. The sophomore now has two interception returns of 50 yards or more in league play.
Newberry place kicker Ryan Lukshis provided the game-winning points on a 32-yard field goal with 1.9 seconds remaining in the game as the Indians prevailed 17-14 over Tusculum. The Dutch Fork High School graduate was two-for-two on extra point attempts.
Following the Tusculum contest, Lukshis has amassed 125 career extra points. The 5-11, 160 pound specialist continues to move up Newberry's career scoring charts. Lukshis is alone in fourth place with 206 career points.
The SAC Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
