DALLAS -- Wingate University redshirt senior
quarterback Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) has been named a
semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy presented by the
National Football Foundation, the NFF announced today. The Campbell
Trophy is endowed by HealthSouth.
In addition to his semifinalist candidacy for the Campbell Trophy (previously known as the Draddy Trophy), Haffly is also eligible for a 2011 NFF Scholar-Athlete Award. A total of 127 semifinalists were announced; 11 football student-athletes from NCAA Division II made the list.
Semifinalists are nominated by their sports information directors. Semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a 3.2 GPA (or better), have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Haffly is a Physical Education major with a 3.311 GPA. He has been named to the South Atlantic Conference Honor Roll for three years. Haffly has been named to the Wingate Dean's List three times.
A two-year team captain for the Bulldogs, Haffly has served on Wingate's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for four years. In addition, he has served as a volunteer coach at numerous summer football camps, including camps at Georgia Southern, Furman and Wingate.
Haffly has rewritten the Wingate record book. Most recently, he broke Wingate's career passing touchdown record at UNC Pembroke Sept. 17. This season, he is 104-of-174 for 1140 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wingate is second in the SAC in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. Haffly is second on the league charts in two categories.
"Cody Haffly is a bright and intelligent person who thinks quickly on his feet," Wingate head coach Joe Reich says. "He is a phenomenal leader when a leader is needed (the) most. Our team knows he will step up when times are tough."
Haffly was named a pre-season honorable mention All-American by the Consensus Draft Services (CDS), the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL) and the D2vsNAIA Senior Bowl selection. Haffly was one of 24 candidates in the running for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II college football Player of the Year.
For the 2010 season, Haffly was 274-of-448 for 3952 yards and 42 touchdowns. The Capital One Academic All-America® candidate had 300-plus passing yards in nine of his 12 games last season. Haffly earned Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-Super Region 2 second team laurels.
For the first time in school history, Wingate (9-3 overall) won the SAC regular season championship and qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs in 2010. The Bulldogs defeated number 23 Morehouse College 63-41 before falling to number five Albany State University 30-28 in the second round.
In the historic 2010 season, Wingate broke 35 school records on offense and special teams. Offensively, Wingate gained 5,320 yards of total offense and scored 418 points, both school records. The Bulldogs scored 56 touchdowns in 2010, eight more than the previous record.
