South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Players of the Week, Sept. 6

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf  SAC Football Players of the Week for games the first week of the season.  Wingate running back Lawrence Pittman was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum linebacker L'Keith Brown was named the Defensive Player of the Week.  Wingate kicker Caleb Baird picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors for games played the first week of the season.

Pittman, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., ran for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Wingate to a 38-28 win over Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 3.  He carried the ball 16 times for the Bulldogs to average 8.3 yards per rush, including a long run of 50 yards.  His performance marked the sixth time in his career that he has posted a 100-plus yard rushing game.  The honor is his first Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.

Brown, a junior from Athens, Ga., posted nine tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and forced a school-record three fumbles in Tusculum's double overtime loss to Virginia-Wise on Sept. 1.  His 3.5 tackles for loss pushed the Cavaliers back 13 yards, while his two sacks put Virginia-Wise in a 10 yard hole.  He anchored a TC defense that kept the Cavaliers out of the endzone during regulation as Virgina-Wise finished the contest with just 39 rushing yards.  The award is his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.

Baird, a senior from Kinston, N.C. hit five-of-five extra points and nailed his only field goal attempt to help the Bulldogs claim a 38-28 victory in their season and home opener against the Johnson C. Smith. Baird also made a game-changing solo tackle on special teams as well.  The honor is his first Special Team Player of the Week plaudit this season.
