The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Football Players of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. ( – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Football Players of the Week for games played during week six of the 2019 season.  Newberry running back Chance Walker was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum defensive back Dee Alford was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Lenoir-Rhyne punter Michael Owen picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Walker, a junior from Gaston, S.C., led the Wolves to a 44-21 win over Catawba. He set program records for rushing yards with 261 and rushing touchdowns with six. He also set the Newberry single-game scoring record, and tied the SAC scoring record, accounting for 36 of the Wolves' points in the win. His six touchdowns also tied the SAC record for touchdowns in a game. He averaged 10 yards per carry, while also catching two passes for 20 yards. In all he finished the day with 281 all-purpose yards. This is Walker's first offensive player of the week honor.

Alford, a senior from Griffin, Ga., was instrumental in helping the Pioneers to a 21-19 win over UVa-Wise last week. He recorded six tackles, including four solo tackles, along with a tackle for loss; four pass breakups and an interception. His interception was returned for 32 yards and setup Tusculum's first touchdown of the day. He also had six punt returns for 92 yards, including a career-best 52-yard return. This is Alford's first defensive player of the week honor of the season.

Owen, a sophomore from Duluth, Ga., was the X factor in the Bears' 36-23 win over Carson-Newman on Saturday. He had three punts for 147 yards, averaging 49 yards per punt. All three were downed inside the 10-yard line, including one at the one-yard line. His punts lead to a safety and an Eagles turnover, which eventually led to a Lenoir-Rhyne touchdown. This is Owen's first special teams player of the week accolade of the season.
