Newberry's Historic Season Ends in National Championship Game
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Newberry field hockey closed out a historic season with a strong performance in the NCAA Division II National Championship on Saturday, pushing Shippensburg to sudden-victory overtime before falling 3–2. The Wolves tied the match twice, controlled long stretches of play, and outshot the Raiders, showing the same fight that carried them through an undefeated regular season and into their first national title game.
Newberry generated steady pressure throughout the match and answered every setback. After Shippensburg opened the scoring in the first quarter, the Wolves responded early in the third when Wibien Dahmen finished her 17th goal of the season to even the match 1–1. The Raiders regained the lead late in the third, but Newberry again found an answer. Lieke Varenkamp, who hit the post earlier in the match, buried the equalizer at 43:09 to make it 2–2 and keep Newberry in control heading into the final period.
The Wolves continued to push in the fourth, creating multiple scoring chances, including a shot off the crossbar from Amber Tozana and several penalty corners generated by Emma Westbrook. Newberry's attack outshot Shippensburg across regulation, while goalkeeper Ayanda Mangenah delivered key saves to keep the match level and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, Newberry produced the first two shots, attempts by Agustina Montserrat and Payton Keeler, but Shippensburg capitalized on a transition chance moments later, scoring the sudden-victory goal at 62:11.
Despite the result, Newberry's performance reflected the growth and competitiveness of the program. The Wolves tied the game twice, outshot the national powerhouse, and carried momentum through large stretches of the match. The effort capped an exceptional season that included a SAC championship, a No. 1 national seed, and the program's first NCAA Tournament win and appearance in the national final.
Newberry's run stands as one of the strongest postseason performances the conference has seen in recent years, and the Wolves return home having represented the SAC at the highest level on the biggest stage.
