Tusculum’s Moore, Newberry’s Martin, Brevard’s Whitson Named To Daktronics All-Southeast Region Men’s Basketball Team
MORROW, Ga. - Three South Atlantic Conference players have been named to Daktronics men's basketball All-Southeast Region team, it was announced Wednesday. Tusculum College's Kyle Parker has been named to first team, while Newberry College's Clemente Martin and Brevard College's Jonathan Whitson have been named to the second team.
Moore, a 6-3, 185-pound junior from Gainesville, Fla. becomes the third player in Tusculum history to earn NCAA All-Region honors, but the first to garner First Team recognition. As a first-team selection, he becomes eligible for All-America honors. Moore has been named the 2008-09 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and is leading the league in scoring, averaging 21 points per game, which is the 18th best average in the nation. The two-time All-SAC guard also leads the conference in three-point field goals made per game, averaging 3.1 per contest (15th in NCAA II).

Martin, a senior from Freeport, Bahamas, ends his career with his first all-region honor after being named a first team all-South Atlantic Conference representative for the last two seasons. He was also named to the All-SAC Tournament team on Sunday. He averaged 19.2 points per game in his senior season as well as pulling down5.6 rebounds per game.
In his career, Martin scored 1,667 points, which ranks him 10th in Newberry College history and sixth in the history of the South Atlantic Conference. He equaled his career high of 32 points in the overtime win over Mars Hill that sent Newberry to the conference tournament semifinals and helped lead the team to a 21-8 record, marking the most wins the school has earned in 27 seasons.
Whitson, a junior forward, becomes the first Tornado in any sport to be honored as an all-region selection at the NCAA Division II level.
Whitson (Clyde, N.C.) led the Tornados in scoring and rebounding in 2008-09, tallying 19.1 ppg and 8.7 rpg. He led the South Atlantic Conference in rebounding as well as made field goals, and last week was Brevard's first All-SAC selection, earning a 1st team nod.
Whitson's best performance of the year, perhaps, came on February 11 against North Greenville, when he scored a career-high 33 points in a 78-62 win. In the game, Whitson set Brevard's all-time scoring record. February 25 against Newberry, he added the school's all-time rebounding record to his list of achievements.
The Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams are voted on by the sports information directors of the Southeast Region. The region is comprised of the Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference, the South Atlantic Conference, Chowan University and North Greenville University.
