Brevard’s Jonathan Whitson Named Men’s Basketball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Brevard College's Jonathan Whitson has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending February 7, 2010. He wins the award for the second time this season.
Whitson, a senior forward from Clyde, N.C. (Pisgah HS), led the Tornados to a perfect 2-0 on the week as Brevard ascended back into first place in the South Atlantic Conference with wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Lincoln Memorial. For the week Whitson averaged 24.0 points per game, while connecting on 69.0 percent of his shots. Whitson also went a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line and averaged 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.
Against Lenoir-Rhyne, Whitson went six of nine from the floor, scoring 10 of his team-high 16 points in the second half as the Bears attempted to mount a comeback. Whitson added six rebounds and a pair of steals in the win which tied the Tornados with Lincoln Memorial.
On Saturday, Whitson scored 32 points in the game with 22 coming
in the second half with the game still in doubt as the senior shot
14-20 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. Whitson
added three blocks and three steals in the contest to go with five
rebounds in leading Brevard to first place atop the SAC
rankings.
On the season, Whitson is ranked in the top 10 in the South Atlantic Conference scoring, rebounding, free throw percentage and blocked shots and is the Brevard College all-time leader in points scored over his career with 1,870.
