Six Men’s Basketball Players Named To Daktronics All-Region Team
MORROW, Ga. - The 2009-2010 men's basketball Dakronics All-Region team has been announced with six players selected from the South Atlantic Conference, including two first team selections. The SAC player of the year Kyle Moore of Tusculum was named to the first team for the second year in a row.
Mars Hill's Danny Sanders joins Moore on the first team. D'Mario Curry of Lincoln Memorial, D.J. Blackmon of Lenoir-Rhyne, Antonio Houston of Catawba, and Jonathan Whitson of Brevard are all named second team All-Regional. The entire six-man SAC All-Conference first team is represented on the All-Region team, and the SAC had six All-Region selections, while the Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas each had two representatives. Both Moore and Sanders are now eligible for the All-American ballot.

Moore, a 6-3, 190-pound senior guard from Gainesville, Fla., was named to the Daktronics' First Team All-Region for the second straight year as well as being named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year for a second straight season. Moore led the league in scoring for a second straight year, averaging 24.8 points per game, which is currently third in NCAA Division II and fifth nationally for all NCAA divisions. Moore's scoring average is the second highest in league history and fifth in school history. In just 87 games in a Pioneer uniform, Moore connected on 306 career three-point field goals, which are the most in conference history, Moore also holds the SAC record for most three-point field goals in a single season with 117 made this season. Moore was an All-Conference performer all three years he played in the SAC.
Sanders, a 6-3 senior guard from Shelby, N.C., lead the nation in steals per game with 3.7 and is ranked eighth nationally in points scored per contest with 23.0, good for second in the conference. He also placed eleventh in the country in 3-point field goals per game with 3.4, also good for second in the SAC. Sanders was named First Team All-Conference while leading the Lions to a tie for second place in the South Atlantic Conference regular season standings.
Whitson is a second team selection for the second straight year after finishing among the South Atlantic Conference leaders in points, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocks, free throw percentage and minutes played per game and guiding the Tornados to their first berth in the NCAA Tournament.
This award comes one week after Whitson was named a First Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection and was the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading the Tornados men's basketball team to Brevard College's first SAC title.
Throughout the year, Whitson achieved the personal milestone of reaching 2,000 points in his career and he currently is the BC career leader in points scored at 2,013, rebounds with 933, field goals made at 781, field goals attempted at 1,500, free throws made with 431, free throws attempted at 594 and will finish his career as the Brevard College all-time scoring average leader, averaging 18.0 points per game as a Tornados.
For the season, Whitson also set several records, including most free throws made and most consecutive free throws made in a row, while also setting the school record for most consecutive free throws made in a game and most field goals made in a game.
Curry, a 6-7 junior forward from Detroit, MI, led the Railsplitters to a 20-9 record this season, led the conference in rebounding with 11.3 boards per game. Curry also ranked first in the SAC in blocks per game with 3.43, sixth in scoring with 16.9 points per game, and seventh in steals with 1.46 per game. Curry is a two time first team All-Conference selection.
Blackmon, a 6-6 junior forward from Albemarle, N.C., led the Bears in scoring (20.5 ppg), rebounding (6.8 rpg) and assists (2.7 apg) this year. Blackmon, a second-team all-league pick in 2008-09, scored in double figures in every game this season and 27 dating back to last year and became the 50th player in school history to score 1,000 points in his career. Blackmon also ranked third in the SAC in scoring and steals (2.04 spg) in 2009-10.
Antonio Houston, a 6-4 senior guard from Charlotte, N.C, was a three-time first team All-Conference selection. He is second in the SAC's career-scoring list. This season, he is averaging a team-leading 16.5 points and pulling down 5.1 rebounds a game. Houston has connected on 64-of-151 (42.4 percent) of his three-point attempts.
Augusta State's Ben Madgen was selected as the 2009-10 Daktronics Division II Southeast Region Player of the Year. It is the second straight season that Madgen has garnered Southeast Region Player of the Year honors.
The Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams are voted on by the sports information directors of the Southeast Region. The region is comprised of the Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference, the South Atlantic Conference, Chowan University and North Greenville University.
