Newberry Finishes 14th, LMU 18th At NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Tournament
WILSON, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team finished in 14th place, while Lincoln Memorial University wrapped up in 18th place at the 2010 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional in Wilson, N.C.
Newberry's three round stroke total of 877 (297-291-289), 25-over par, came 32 strokes behind tournament champion Barry University (283-281-281=845; -7). The scarlet and gray improved by six strokes from the first to the second round and three strokes from Tuesday to Wednesday's final round at the par-71, 6,839-yard Wilson Country Club.
Along with Barry, Lynn University (289-275-282=846; -7), Florida Southern College (292-275-287=854; +2), Nova Southeastern University (285-280-293=858; +6), and Queens University of Charlotte (291-288-280=859; +7) qualified for the NCAA Championships held May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Individually, Newberry junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) and sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) each tied for 40th after shooting a three round total of 218, 5-over par. Stanley tallied a stroke total of 74 in the first two rounds and finished the tournament strong with a 1-under par 70 in the final round. Campbell also fared well on Wednesday with an even par 71 following a second round 75 and third round 72.
Freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) tied for 72nd with each registering a 54-hole score of 224, 11-over par. Gruenemeier shot rounds of 75, 73, and 76 while Collard put up scores of 78, 74, and 72.
Junior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished play with a three round total of 230 (76-70-84; +17) and tied for 91st.
Ben Lasso of Queens won the individual championship with an 8-under par (69-69-67=205; -8) performance over 54 holes. The two individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships are J.P. Albuquerque from St. Leo University and Daniel Claytor from Barton College.
The Railsplitters earned their first trip to NCAA post-season play as a team by winning this year's South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The victory at Etowah Valley County Club two weeks ago, gave the Railsplitters the league's automatic bid.
LMU's effort was carried by South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Eric Kennedy (Powell, TN). The sophomore finished the three-day event with a combined score of 219, which was six strokes over par and 14 strokes off the lead to tie for 43rd place.
Railsplitter senior Josh Collins (Luttrell, TN) played from the five position but finished second highest among the Railsplitters in the tournament. Collins put together a three-day score of 222 to finish tied for 60th place. Teammate Jamie Chapman (Sussex, England) struggled somewhat the first day with a 79 however, shot back-to-back 73's the final two rounds to turn in a combined score of 225 to tie for 76th place.
LMU's Cory Bartlett (Shanty Bay, Ontario, Canada) (230) and Joshua Cornett (Mountain City, TN) (231) tied for 91st and 96th place by the end of the event.
