Newberry Fourth, Carson-Newman’s Hay Seventh, At NCAA Men’s Golf Regional
DeLAND, Fla. - Another strong round from the Newberry College men's golf team has the Wolves in position to fight for a berth to the national tournament. Newberry's second round 7-over par 295 has the Wolves in fourth place after two rounds of play at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament at the Victoria Hills Golf Club.
The top five teams after Wednesday's final round will earn a spot at the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championships in Florence, Ala., May 16-20. The Wolves will be shooting for the second national tournament in program history, with the first appearance in 2008.
Consistency was the name of the game for Newberry on Tuesday, as three players - Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.), Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) - each carded 1-over par 73's in the second round on the 7,072-yard Victoria Hills course.
Lown is tied for 10th after two rounds with a 1-over par 145, while Campbell is tied for 33rd with a 148 (+4) and Gruenemeier is tied for 55th with a 151 (+7).
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) is now tied for 24th after shooting 4-over today and carding a 147 (+3) through two rounds, while Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) is also tied for 55th with Gruenemeier at 151 (+7) after an 81 Tuesday.
Carson-Newman sophomore Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) carded a second-round 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to move into a tie for seventh place.
Hay is just three shots off the lead with a two-round score of 144 (E). Lynn's Ricardo Gouveia leads the tournament with a score of 141 (67-74, -3). Hay enters the final round in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships, as the top two individuals not on one of the five qualifying teams advances. He is currently in a tie for the second qualifying spot.
C-N junior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) shot a 78 (+6) on Tuesday and is tied for 71st with a two-round total of 154 (+10).
The top five teams and top two student-athletes not with one of those five teams (regardless of region) advance to the National Tournament on May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Florence, Ala. Twenty teams are participating in the Super Regional.
The final round of the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional will be held on Wednesday.
Barry University is now the tournament leader after shooting an impressive 3-under par 285 in Tuesday's round. Lynn University is in second place, with Barton College in third. West Florida is behind Newberry in fifth.
The Wolves will start the third and final round of the Super Regional with a wave of tee times starting at noon Wednesday, in the second to last grouping of teams to play.
