Anderson Claims the Lead After Opening Round of 2023 SAC Men's Golf Championship
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The Anderson Trojans fired an eight-under-par 280 as a team to take a six-shot lead over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (-2, 286) in the opening round of the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Lake Hickory Country Club Catawba Springs Course in Hickory, N.C. on Sunday (April 16).
Following the Trojans and Bears in third place are the Tusculum Pioneers with an opening round of 288 even-par golf. The Coker Cobras are in fourth at 293 (+5) and the Limestone Saints are fifth at 294 (+6). Carson-Newman finished in sixth at 296 (+8), followed by Lincoln Memorial in seventh at 297 (+7). Wingate and Newberry are tied for eighth at 301 (+13) and Catawba is in tenth at 304 (+16). Mars Hill and UVA Wise round out the field in a tie for 11th at 328 (+40).
Individually, 10 players finished under-par in the first round with Anderson's Alejandro de Castro leading the way with a five-under-par 67. A quartet of golfers are tied for second at two-under-par 69, Anderson's Calahan Keever, Lenoir-Rhyne's Liam Waldron, Limestone's Kristoffer Larsson, Tusculum's Riley Brown. Anderson's Reece Coleman shot a two-under-par 70, and Carson-Newman's Luke Stock, Lenoir-Rhyne's Samuel Mace, Lincoln Memorial's George Durkan, and Tusculum's Nicholas Taggart all shot one-under-par 71.
