No. 1 Wingate 3, No. 8 Brevard 2 (2OT)
WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate University junior midfielder Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the top-seeded Bulldogs a 3-2 win over the eighth-seeded Tornados of Brevard College in first round action of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men's soccer tournament Wednesday night. Wingate improves to 15-2 on the season and advances to the semifinals to take on Mars Hill College Friday at 6 p.m. Brevard falls to 3-15-1 on the year.
Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) netted his team-best 13th goal of the season in the 16th minute. Barancoski assisted on the goal, serving a cross from inside the box to the opposite corner. Junior forward Paulo Brunetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead, scoring his third goal of the year with 58 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Tornados struck in the 70th minute, when freshman midfielder Jami Uuttu (Naantali, Finland) scored his third goal of the year from an assist by junior forward Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fla.). Brevard tied the game three minutes later, when sophomore defender Landon Reid (Shelby, N.C.) got behind the defense to score his second goal of the season. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to end it in the first overtime, but Barancoski's line drive hit the crossbar.
Wingate was awarded a free kick from outside the box in the corner with under a minute remaining in the second overtime. Senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) served one right in front of the net and Barancoski headed home the game-winner to put the Bulldogs in the SAC semifinals. It is the eighth goal of the season for Barancoski. It is also Mulholland's team-leading 10th assist on the season. The assist gives the two-time All-American 100 points in his Wingate career.
Wingate outshot Brevard 27-7 on the night, while holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) collected a pair of saves for the Bulldogs. Freshman goalkeeper Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) had four saves for the Tornados. Both net minders went the distance Tuesday.
The Bulldogs will take on the fifth-seeded Lions of Mars Hill College Friday at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. (6 p.m. kick-off). Mars Hill edged Wingate 1-0 in the regular season, handing the Bulldogs their only conference loss of the year. The Lions also knocked Wingate out of the Food Lion SAC tournament in 2009.
No. 2 Carson-Newman 2, No. 7 Catawba 1
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The second-seeded Carson-Newman men's soccer team scored two goals in a span of 21 seconds to rally for a 2-1 victory over seventh-seeded Catawba on Wednesday night at McCown Field in first round action of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
With the win, the Eagles (12-4-1) advance to the semifinals and will face third-seeded Anderson on Friday at 6 p.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but Catawba came out of the locker room and took a 1-nil lead in the 54th minute. Sophomore Carson Smith (Mooresville, N.C.) fired a shot from 20 yards out and placed it in the upper left corner to give the Indians the lead.
C-N answered, however, as junior Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) knocked the ball loose in front of the net and sophomore Adam Thomas (Morristown, Tenn.) scored the equalizer in the 55th minute.
Just 21 seconds later, the Eagles tallied the match winner with a goal from junior forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England).
C-N finished the match with a 13-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Eagles goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) collected two saves in earning the win, while Catawba's Luke McCarthy (Naples, Fla.) had four saves.
C-N will match up with an Anderson squad on Friday that it defeated 2-0 on Sept. 25.
No. 3 Anderson 1, No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne 0 (OT)
ANDERSON, S.C. - Junior Lasse Sohrweide's goal in the 95th minute lifted third-seeded Anderson past six-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in opening round action of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at Trojan Stadium.
The Bear's end their season at 10-8, while the Trojans (12-5-1) advance to Friday's semifinals to meet the winner of this evening's Catawba/Carson-Newman quarterfinal matchup. Anderson will square off at 6 p.m. versus either the Indians or Eagles at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Trojans rebounded from a setback in their regular-season finale at No. 19 Wingate to garner a quarterfinal win in their first-ever appearance in the conference tournament as a member of the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne had its two-match win streak broken, while AU avenged an earlier setback suffered at the hands of the Bears in the league-opener.
Anderson claimed its eighth win in its last nine outings, and first overtime win of the season, when Ben Jones worked in from the right side of the box and found Sohrweide moving to his left. The Bears' defense came out in an attempt to clear the ball but as LRU keeper Tom Heath moved to his left, Sohrweide found the back of the net with his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
The two teams battled on even terms in a cold, steady drizzling rain with neither squad able to capitalize on their limited opportunities. The stellar defensive effort by both squads saw them combine to post just three shots on goal in the first half and each squad recorded two corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
Sohrweide finished with a game-high 10 shots, including tree on goal, while teammate Clement Samson recorded two shots and Lenoir-Rhyne senior Dave Bailey posted three shots.
Heath suffered the setback while recording five saves in the effort and AU netminder Lukas Hesse garnered three saves while getting the win.
