The South Atlantic Conference Announces Men's Soccer Annual Awards
Wingate forward Charlie Machell was voted the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year, while Anderson’s Magnus Larsen was voted the Conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Wingate mentor Gary Hamill was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSac.com) – Wingate forward Charlie Machell was voted the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year, while Anderson's Magnus Larsen was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Wingate mentor Gary Hamill was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
Machell, a sophomore from Newcastle, England, becomes Wingate's first Player of the Year since 2009 as he finished the 2014 regular-season ranked in the top 30 in the nation in four categories. He is currently No. 26 in the country with 11 total goals and is 20th in Division II with four game-winning goals on the year. Machell kicked in 0.73 goals per game to rank 26th in the country, while his 1.67 points per game is good for No. 30. He posted a pair of hat tricks this season, including a hat trick in a win over Conference foe Queens on Oct. 22. He also dished out four assists on the season and posted two helpers in the Bulldogs' win over Tusculum on Sept. 27.
Larsen, a midfielder from Broenby, Denmark, becomes the first-ever Trojan to receive Freshman of the Year honors as he currently ranks in the top 10 in the Conference in five offensive categories. He is currently second in the League with three game-winning goals this season to go along with seven total goals to rank No. 3 in the Conference. Larsen is tied for fourth in the SAC with 17 total points, while his 1.0 points per game is tied for sixth. He is also eighth in the South Atlantic Conference with 0.41 goals per contest. Against Brevard on Oct. 22, Larsen posted a pair of scores in the 3-1 win over Brevard. Larsen picked up eight top bids from the panel.
Hamill coached Wingate to its first regular-season championship since the 2010 season. His Bulldogs turned in an 8-2-1 Conference mark and are 12-3-1 over. Wingate is currently ranked No. 17 in Division II with 2.13 assists per game and are No. 23 in the nation with a 0.47 shutout percentage. The Bulldogs climbed to No. 20 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll this past week. The honor marks his sixth South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year plaudit of his career.
Roberto Pimentel of Tusculum, Andre Carle of Anderson and Leonardo Da silva from Lincoln Memorial joined Machell on the list of first-team forwards. Mullen of Mars Hill, Shaun Gadsby from Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne's Ben Jones and Jordan Snell of Coker were tabbed first-team midfielders.
On the defensive side, Alex Nelson of Wingate, Lars Zimmermann from Anderson, Mars Hill's Christian McArthur and Victor Tozelli of Wingate were tabbed the first-team defenders. Goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz of Lincoln Memorial rounded out the list of first-team honorees.
