Wingate’s Charlie Machell Earns Third Team All-American Honors from the NSCAA
2014 NSCAA Division II All-Americans
Kansas City, Mo.----Wingate University sophomore midfielder Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) has been named a third team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA). The teams were released Friday afternoon. Machell earns All-American honors for the first time in his career.
Machell is the eighth player in Wingate men's soccer history to earn All-American honors. He is the first since Luke Mulholland earned first team All-American accolades from Daktronics in 2009. Mulholland earned third team All-American recognition from the NSCAA in 2008.
Machell helped lead the Bulldogs to a regular season South Atlantic Conference title in 2014. Wingate also advanced to the SAC Tournament championship match, while earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 'Dogs won the opening round match 4-1 against Barton, advancing to the regional semifinals. Wingate finished with a 14-5-1 record, including an 8-2-1 mark in league play. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked 22nd in the final NSCAA top 25 poll.
Machell was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the year in 2014. The sophomore earned first team All-SAC honors, while earning first team All-Region accolades from Daktronics and the NSCAA. He led the SAC with 12 goals and 28 points. "It is a great honor for Charlie to round out a great year for him and the program," Wingate head coach GaryHamill says.
Machell had a hat trick in Wingate's 4-1 win against Emmanuel. Machell had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win at UNC Pembroke, while registering a pair of assists in the 3-1 win against Tusculum. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Carson-Newman, while also netting the game-winner against Mars Hill. Machell's second hat trick of the year came in the victory at Queens. He scored a goal in the LMU victory on the final day of the regular season that clinched the regular season SAC title, while also scoring in the SAC Tournament win against Coker.
