Wingate Captures 2024 Men's and Women's Swimming Championship Title
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wingate Bulldogs captured both the Men's and Women's Swimming Championship titles for the second year in a row as the championships concluded on Saturday (Feb 17).
Wingate's Lucie Andrews was named the Women's Swimmer of the Meet, while teammate Vera Karlsson was named the Freshman of the Year. On the men's side, Wingate's Damir Ipkaev earned both the Men's Swimmer of the Meet and Men's Freshman of the Year honors.
Wingate's Kevin Hennessy was named the Women's Coach of the Year, while Catawba's Matthew Gearing was named the Men's Coach of the Year.
Wingate's Jack Wisniewski was named the Men's Elite 23 Winner, while Catawba's Lillie Martin was honored as the Women's Elite 23 recipient.
Day Four Results
Catawba's Fiona Byrne was crowned the Women's 1650 Freestyle champion, finishing the event with a time of 17:09.96 and earning an NCAA DII B Cut. Wingate's Grace Wilson took second with a time of 17:25.33, and Emory & Henry's Mack Barnett rounded out the podium in third with a time of 17:32.09.
In the Men's 1650 Freestyle, Wingate's Miguel Marcos won the event with a time of 15:31.41. Catawba's Elias Hysing finished in second with a time of 15:37.92, and Mars Hill's Andrews Bodington took third with a time of 15:39.77. All three men earned an NCAA DII B Cut in the event.
Wingate's Amanda Wenhold won the Women's 100 Freestyle with a time of 50.74, followed by teammate Lucie Andrews who finished second with a time of 50.76. Carson-Newman's Kennadi King finished third with a time of 50.87. All three women earned an NCAA DII B Cut in the event.
In the Men's 100 Freestyle, Catawba's Maks Minichowski took first with a time of 43.78. Carson-Newman's Arthur Gluzman took second with a time of 44.09, and Wingate's Mike Topchanalis finished third with a time of 44.70. All three men earned an NCAA DII B Cut in the event.
Wingate's Marta Beesmans won the Women's 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:58.55. Carson-Newman's Kyla Blakemore followed in second with a time of 2:00.17 and Wingate's Vera Karlsson finished in third with a time of 2:02.17. All three women earned an NCAA DII B Cut in the event.
Wingate's Ney Chagas Filho won the Men's 200 Backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:45.47 for an NCAA DII B Cut. Carson-Newman's Daniel de Oliveira took second with a time of 1:48.68, and teammate Tyler Schehr took third with a time of 1:49.94.
Carson-Newman's Antonia Sanint won the Women's 200 Breaststroke, touching the wall first with a time of 2:18.35. Catawba's Gabi Moll took second with a time of 2:18.39, and Wingate's Cornelia Almqvist finished third at 2:18.59. All three women earned an NCAA DII B Cut in the event.
In the Men's 200 Breaststroke, Catawba's Balazs Meszaros took first with a time of 2:01.13. Wingate's Mikolaj Dobrindt took second with a time of 2:02.50, and teammate Andres Martijena took third with a time of 2:03.57.
The meet was concluded with the 400 Freestyle Relay, as Carson-Newman took first (3:23.89), Wingate finished second (3:25.62), and Catawba finished third (3:28.84). On the men's side, Carson-Newman took first (2:57.96), Wingate finished second (2:59.51), and Catawba finished third (3:02.10).
