Catawba’s Shahin Soltan Named Men’s Tennis Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College senior Shahin Soltan, of Vetlanda, SWEDEN, has been named the first South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week of 2009 for the period extending from Feb. 1 to Feb. 17. Soltan helped Catawba to three wins in four matches over the period. Catawba defeated Coker, 9-0, Winston-Salem State, 6-1, and Alberta, 7-2, suffering a loss against N.C. Central, 6-1.
Soltan won three of four singles matches at the No. 1 spot and
also added three doubles wins with Uri Yarkoni at No. 1. Soltan
earned a 7-5, 6-1 won over Coker's Juan Vallejo-Gonzalez on Feb. 12
then split matches against NCAA I opponents on Feb. 15. He won in
straight sets over WSSU's Brian Coxton 6-3, 7-5 before suffering
his lone loss to Jack Waissen, of NCCU, 6-2, 6-4. He picked up a
6-2, 6-1 win in the match against Alberta on Feb. 17.
In doubles, Soltan and Yarkoni won 8-4 vs. Coker, 8-5 against WSSU and 8-6 over Alberta. The duo lost to NCCU 8-2. For the season, Soltan has posted a 7-1 record in singles and is 6-2 in doubles.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors.
