First SAC Tennis Weekly Awards go to Newberry’s Saunders, Wingate’s Evers
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Tennis season is officially underway in the SAC, and the conference's first Player of the Week awards have been given to Newberry's Michael Saunders and Wingate's Ali Evers, it was announced on Wednesday.
Saunders had a perfect week in both the No. 1 singles and doubles positions in Newberry's matches against Benedict and North Georgia.
Against Benedict, Saunders defeated Shane Latchman, 6-1, 6-4, before teaming with Vinicius Botelho to win the No. 1 doubles match in convincing fashion, 8-1.
Saunders followed up with a straight-sets victory in the No. 1 singles match versus North Georgia's Felipe Friedrich, and won again with Botelho in the No. 1 doubles contest.
Playing No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, Evers also had an unbeaten
week for Wingate, as the Bulldogs picked up team wins against
Augusta St. and Limestone.
Evers opened the week with a three-set win over Augusta St.'s Liv Petterson and a doubles victory with teammate Becca Thomas.
She then took care of Limestone's Jimena Munoz Quiroga in straight sets and teamed with Thomas to win the pair's doubles match, 8-4.
