Wingate’s Owen, Tusculum’s Verner Named SAC Tennis Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate senior Andrew Owen and Tusculum's Holly Verner have been selected as the SAC Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for matches played March 19-25, it was announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Owen tallied three wins in singles and doubles last week, including
a key three-set victory over Francis Marion's Jack Bishop at the
No. 2 position to propel Wingate over the 13th-ranked Patriots,
5-4. Owen also nabbed a doubles win in the match against FMU, as
the senior paired up with Matthew Lichtenstein at No. 2 to win,
9-7.
Later in the week, Owen dropped just two games against
Carson-Newman and Tusculum in the singles rounds. The senior also
earned two doubles victories alongside Lichtenstein. The pair have
lost just one doubles match together this season.

Verner is currently riding a five-match winning streak in singles
play as she added three victories last week. The freshman nabbed
straight-set victories in all three matches, dropping just five
games at the No. 1 spot.
In doubles action, Verner paired up with teammate Katelyn Doss and
captured three matches to improve their doubles record to 9-1 on
the season. This is the second time this season she has earned SAC
Player of the Week honors.
