Lenoir-Rhyne’s Fellmeth, Wingate’s Smith Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jessica Fellmeth has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Wingate University's Allison Smith earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending April 10, announced conference officials Monday.
Fellmeth, a sophomore first baseman from Waxhaw, N.C. (Weddington HS), batted .583 (7-for-12) with three home runs and 11 runs batted in to lead the Bears to a 4-0 week. Fellmeth hit two home runs to go along with five RBI in L-R's 8-2 win over Newberry in the second game of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Thursday on the road. Fellmeth added a three-run home run in a 12-7 victory over league-foe Anderson Saturday at home in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep. Fellmeth also scored five runs and tallied a 1.417 slugging percentage for the week and is currently batting .361 with eight home runs and 32 RBI on the year for 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (32-7, 11-1).
Smith, a senior from Daleville, Va. (Manhattan College), led Wingate to a 4-0 week against conference opponents. She started the first three games, notching complete game shutouts in all three. She capped her week by working the final two innings for a save. She struck out five while allowing five hits in the 1-0 win over Anderson in game one. Smith tossed a one-hitter in the night cap at Anderson, striking out six. She struck out seven while allowing five hits against Brevard. She came in to the second game Saturday with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth. She allowed only one hit in the two innings, without giving up a run and striking out two. Smith struck out 20 while allowing 12 hits and three walks, with only two extra-base hits.
