Wingate’s Anna Atkinson Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Anna Atkinson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by league officials today.
Atkinson, a senior guard from Marion, N.C., led the Bulldogs to a 2-1 week with wins over UNC Pembroke and Lincoln Memorial. On the week, Atkinson averaged 15.3 points per game, 7.7 assists per game, 6.7 rebounds per game and 3.3 steals per game. Her assist-to-turnover ratio was 3.8 in the three contests.
On Saturday, Atkinson led WU to a 73-72 conference win over LMU
with season-high totals of 22 points and 12 assists.
She assisted junior forward Sarah Rosser on the winning basket with
4.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Atkinson barely missed her
first career triple-double with nine rebounds, while also adding
six steals.
In a neutral-site regional victory over UNC Pembroke Tuesday, Atkinson recorded 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds. On Monday, the 2008 SAC Player of the Year notched five points, five rebounds and four assists in a tough 63-55 regional road loss to Georgia College & State. Atkinson was named to the Craig Massee Classic All-Tournament team.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
