Wingate’s Kurie Washington Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Kurie Washington has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by league officials today.
Washington, a freshman guard from Marion, N.C., averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as the Bulldogs posted wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman in the final week of regular season play. She earns the honor for the second week in a row.
In Wednesday's 89-78 win over regular season co-champions
Lenoir-Rhyne, Washington netted 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds
and dished out two assists.
In Saturday's 99-90 road victory over Carson-Newman, Washington scored a career-high 30 points to go with two boards. For the week, Washington hit 16-of-17 free throws for a 94.1 free throw percentage.
Washington is Wingate's second-leading scorer with 15.3 points per game. In SAC play, she is averaging 18.8 points per game.
Wingate now stands at 18-9 overall and 9-7 in SAC action going into the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs will have a rematch of the regular season finale in the quarterfinal round, as they visit the fourth-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles for a 7 p.m. tipoff Wednesday.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
