Wingate’s Washington Named SAC Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Kurie Washington has been named the South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week, for the week ending February 14, 2010. She wins for the second time this season.
Washington, a sophomore guard/forward from Marion, N.C. (McDowell HS), had a big week as the Bulldogs won two South Atlantic Conference road games. On Saturday, she hit an eight-foot runner at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 57-56 SAC women's basketball victory over Brevard College Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Washington led all scorers with 24 points as the Bulldogs
improve to 14-9 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. She scored 20 points in
the second half. In addition, Washington tallied Wingate's final
nine points. Her buzzer-beater gave Wingate its first lead since
the 15:19 mark of the first half. Washington has enjoyed her first
two visits to Boshamer Gymnasium. Last year, Washington tallied a
(then) career-high 28 points and the Bulldogs rallied from an
18-point second half deficit to pick up a wild 94-88 victory on
Jan. 17, 2009.
On Wednesday, Washington scored 10 points after intermission as the visiting Bulldogs defeated Tusculum College 78-68 in Pioneer Arena. The 2009 SAC Freshman of the Year added five rebounds.
For the week, Washington averaged 17.0 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and 1.5 steals per game. She hit .481 percent from the floor (13-of-27). Washington leads Wingate with her 17.4 points per game.
