Three SAC Teams Selected to NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship
INDIANAPOLIS - Wingate, Tusculum and Catawba have earned bids to the 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship, the association announced on Sunday night.
By winning the 2012 Food Lion SAC Women's Basketball Championship, Wingate received the SAC's automatic selection into the tournament field, while Tusculum and Catawba earned at-large selections.
The Bulldogs are the Southeast Region's No. 3 seed, Tusculum is No. 7 and Catawba is No. 8. All games in the regional will take place at top-seeded USC-Aiken.
WU enters the NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak, including Sunday's dominating victory over Catawba in the SAC Championship title game. The Bulldogs - who also won the SAC regular season championship - are currently 21-7 overall.
Wingate will take on No. 6 seed Barton, which was the runner-up in this weekend's Conference Carolinas Tournament. Barton comes into the game with a record of 21-8.
Tusculum, which finished tied for third in the SAC regular season standings and went 17-10 overall, will be matchup up against No. 2 seed Clayton St. from the Peach Belt. Clayton St. fell in the PBC championship game on Sunday to the region's No. 1 seed, USC-Aiken.
Catawba - the SAC Championship runners-up - will face USC-Aiken in the region's first round. The Indians finished second in the SAC this season with a 12-6 league record and went 18-9 overall.
USC-Aiken enters the Championship at 26-3.
The NCAA Southeast Region Championship is set to get underway on Friday, March 9.
