SAC Announces Women’s Golf Awards
The SAC on Thursday announced its 2013-14 women’s golf award winners, led by Co-Players of the Year Meridith Hawkins of Carson-Newman and Johanna Neumann of Wingate.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The SAC on Thursday announced its 2013-14 women's golf award winners, led by Co-Players of the Year Meridith Hawkins of Carson-Newman and Johanna Neumann of Wingate.
Hawkins and Neumann are currently first and second, respectively, in the SAC in adjusted scoring average at 78.52 and 78.55, per GolfStat.com. Hawkins posted a pair of top-five finishes this season at the Smoky Mountain Invitational and the World Golf Invitational, while Neumann tied for fifth at the Wingate Pinehurst Challenge and notched two other top-10 performances.
Hawkins becomes the third SAC Player of the Year in Carson-Newman history. Neumann, meanwhile, is the first from Wingate.
Hawkins and Neumann also headline the All-SAC First Team, and are joined by Queens' Grace Glaze, Newberry's Marianna Monaco and Catawba's Madison Kennedy. Glaze has an adjusted scoring average of 78.80, Monaco stands at 79.26, and Kennedy closed the regular season with an average of 79.90.
Monaco also earned SAC Freshman of the Year honors – the fifth in Newberry history – after five top-25 showings at events this season, including an individual title at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in October.
Catawba's Leslie Long, Tusculum's Sara Howard, Coker's Taylor Demby, Newberry's Sophia Opitz and Queens' Iris Katla make up the All-SAC Second Team, while the All-SAC Honorable Mention Team consists of Carson-Newman's Danielle Baiunco and Kelli Pemberton, Wingate's Samantha Pugh-Gilder and Caitlin Starrs, and Lincoln Memorial's Lindsay Davis.
The All-Conference Teams are determined by GolfStat.com adjusted scoring averages.
SAC Coach of the Year voting also ended in a tie, honoring Carson-Newman's Suzanne Strudwick and Wingate's Jerry Surratt. Carson-Newman is 37th and Wingate is 45th in the latest GolfStat Division II team rankings.
Surratt earns SAC Coach of the Year accolades for the third time in his career, while Strudwick's selection is her first.
The 2013-14 season culminates this weekend at the 2014 Food Lion SAC Golf Championship. First-round action gets underway on Sunday.
