Queens Takes the Lead After Round Two of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championship
MONROE, N.C (TheSAC.com) –The Queens University of Charlotte Royals made a big move Monday, shaving 15 strokes from their Sunday score to take a six-stroke lead after 36 holes of the South Atlantic Conference women's golf tournament. Queens posted a tourney-best 305 Monday for a two-day total of 625. Wingate University is hosting the 2016 SAC women's golf event at the Monroe Country Club (par 72, 5981 yards).
First round co-leader Carson-Newman is second at 631 after a 319 Monday. Only two strokes separate third place from fifth place, as Newberry (637), first round co-leader Lincoln Memorial (638) and Wingate (639) occupy the aforementioned spots on the team leader board. Newberry improved 13 shots from round one to round two.
The remainder of the team leader board includes Tusculum (652), Coker (660), Anderson (664), Lenoir-Rhyne (667), Mars Hill (682) and Brevard (747). The Tusculum Pioneers improved 12 strokes from Sunday to Monday, while the Mars Hill Lions erased 22 strokes from round one to round two. Twelve schools and 60 student-athletes are participating in this year's SAC championship.
Newberry freshman Nabila Inak shot the best round of the tournament Monday, carding a one-under-par 71 to take the individual lead. She had six birdies Monday. Inak has a 147, one stroke better than SAC Player of the Year and Queens senior Grace Glaze, who posted a 72 Monday. Both Inak and Glaze had identical first-round scores of 76.
First-round leader and Carson-Newman freshman Taylor Hayes is third at 150. She had a 78 Monday following her 72 Sunday. Wingate senior Caitlin Starrs and Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Abbey Hartsell are tied for fourth at 154. Starrs and Hartsell have mirror scorecards, as the Wingate Bulldog has tallied rounds of 76 and 78, while the L-R Bear (and SAC Freshman of the Year) sees scores of 78 and 76 on the individual leader board.
With her monster round today, Inak tops the tournament statistical ledgers with her 2.88 (one-under-par) average on the Monroe Country Club's par three holes. She is second (behind Hayes at nine) with her eight birdies and tied for second in par four scoring with her 4.25 average (five-over-par). In addition, Inak is tied for third in par five scoring at 4.88 (one-under-par).
Glaze leads the par four scoring (4.20, plus four) and the par five scoring (4.63, minus three) statistical rankings entering the third (and final) round. She shares the par five scoring lead with freshman teammate Rhea Bhatia. Glaze and two others lead the SAC event with 24 total pars. Wingate's Starrs is second in par three scoring (3.00, even par) and tied for third in total birdies (five).
The three-day, 54-hole SAC women's golf tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. (in nine-minute increments). Tournament officials have assigned double tee times with 30 players starting their round on number one and 30 players beginning the festivities on number 10. Queens, Carson-Newman and Newberry begin their third round at 9:15 a.m. on number one.
