Northborough, Mass.----For the fourth time this season, the Wingate University Bulldogs have had a player earn national recognition from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association. Sophomore goalie Megan Biase is this week's IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week.
"We are very excited about Megan's National Defensive Player of the Week recognition," head coach Abby Wiley says. "She has been a powerhouse in the cage for us the last two seasons and we are so glad her hard work continues to pay off. Congratulations Megan, keep up the great work!"
Biase is Wingate's fourth National Player of the Week this season. Kendall Wells earned National Offensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 16, while Leah Knowles picked up Defensive Player of the Week accolades that same day. Annie Plotts was named the National Offensive Player of the Week last week.
Biase had an impressive week for the Bulldogs, piling up 11 saves at #6 Queens Wednesday while adding four ground balls and three caused turnovers. The preseason All-SAC selection then helped the Bulldogs post the first shutout in program history on Saturday as Wingate rolled to a 22-0 victory over Coker, with Biase collecting a pair of saves.
Biase leads the SAC and ranks third in the nation with 55 saves this season. She ranks second in the conference and 21st nationally in save percentage, while ranking third in the league in saves per game. Biase is also second in the SAC and 14th in the country in ground balls per game. She has registered double-digit saves in nine of her 13 career games.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 1 p.m.
